CARIN L. HAVEN SENTENCED IN U.S. DISTRICT COURT Bill Mercer, United States Attorney for the District of Montana, announced today that during a federal court session in Missoula, on June 2, 2006, before Chief U.S. District Judge Donald W. Molloy, CARIN L. HAVEN, appeared for sentencing. HAVEN was sentenced to a term of: Probation: 5 years, with 4 months of home confinement * ? Special Assessment: $100 * ? Restitution: $64,105 HAVEN was sentenced in connection with her guilty plea to wire fraud. In an Offer of Proof filed by the United States, the government stated it would have proved at trial the following: On or about December 2000 through January 2001, HAVEN devised a scheme to defraud a casino in Kalispell by placing approximately $64,105 in electronic bets using non-sufficient funds checks. The electronic bets were sent by interstate wire communications from Kalispell to Texas constituting wire fraud. Because there is no parole in the federal system, the "truth in sentencing" guidelines mandate that HAVEN will likely serve all of the time imposed by the court. In the federal system, HAVEN does have the opportunity to earn a sentence reduction for "good behavior." However, this reduction will not exceed 15% of the overall sentence. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kris A. McLean prosecuted the case for the United States. The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
