BOISE SEX OFFENDER GETS 10 YEARS FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

A registered sex offender was sentenced this morning to 10 years in federal prison for possessing child pornography and illegal guns.

Dennis Hartley Yates, 53, pled guilty in May to one count of Possession of Sexually Explicit Images of Minors and one count of Felon in Possession of Firearms and Ammunition. He was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Edward J. Lodge at the federal courthouse in Boise.

Following his prison term, Yates will be on supervised release for another 15 years, during which time he will not be allowed to have contact with minors or use a computer hooked to the Internet. He will also be required to undergo treatment for sexual deviancy.

On December 26, 2006, Boise police executed a search warrant at Yates’ home, seizing four computer hard drives and two thumb drives, as well as five firearms, 9 boxes of ammunition and 6 cartridge magazines loaded with ammunition.

The drives were examined at the FBI’s Intermountain West Regional Computer Forensic Laboratory, where 1077 graphic files were extracted for review as possible child pornography, including sexually explicit images of prepubescent minors. Fourteen of the images were matched with known victims through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s database. The known victims came from Florida, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Russia and Paraguay.

Yates is prohibited from possessing firearms because on October 7, 1998, he entered a plea of guilty to an Idaho state charge of Possession of Sexually Exploitive Material.

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Boise Police Department.
