Two Men Sentenced for Caldwell Bank Robbery
Julio Gamez, 27, and Jesus Mendoza, 31, both of Corvallis, Oregon, were each sentenced to 105 months in federal prison for armed bank robbery and use of a firearm during a crime of violence, the U.S Attorney’s Office announced. U.S. District Judge Brian Stewart also ordered each defendant to serve five years of supervised release after they complete their prison term.
Gamez and Mendoza entered guilty pleas in March 2009, after admitting to robbing the Wells Fargo Bank at 5218 Cleveland Boulevard, Caldwell, Idaho, on November 26, 2008. The defendants entered the bank brandishing pistols and wearing masks, gloves and baseball caps. The bank manager saw them enter and activated a silent alarm. The armed robbers pointed their guns and yelled orders at nine employees and customers. While emptying the tills, they ordered employees into the vault to get the money. The manager told the defendants that the vault was on a time lock and could not be opened for 20 minutes. The defendants decided to wait and ordered everyone except the bank manager and one employee into the safe deposit room. When two customers came into the bank, they too were ordered into the safe deposit room at gunpoint. Police arrived shortly thereafter. The manager advised the robbers to surrender or they would be shot and killed. Eventually, Gamez and Mendoza put down their guns and followed the manager outside where they were taken into police custody.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Caldwell Police Department.
