Defendant in Native American Artifacts Case Found Dead: Suicide Suspected

Steven L. Shrader, one of the defendants in the recently announced FBI/BLM investigation into ARPA and NAGPRA violations, was found dead this morning in Shabbona, Illinois, from apparently self-inflicted gun shot wounds.  Schrader had voluntarily appeared Friday June 12, 2009 at the offices of the FBI in Santa Fe, New Mexico and was taken into custody based on a federal warrant resulting from his indictment as one of many subjects in the ARPA/NAGPRA investigation originating out of the Salt Lake City Division of the FBI.  His residence was not the subject of any of the search warrants executed by the FBI and BLM.

Shrader was released from custody after his initial appearance in federal court in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Monday, June 15, 2009.  He was returned to Santa Fe, New Mexico by federal agents on the same date.  Shrader had been scheduled to make an initial appearance in Salt Lake City, Utah this morning.
