Man Arrested in Connection with the Hercules Credit Union Robbery

Special Agent In Charge Timothy J. Fuhrman and Taylorsville Police Chief Del Craig announced that:

The Salt Lake City Field Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), in conjunction with the Taylorsville City Police Department, arrested Sean Paul Hughes in connection with the robbery of the Hercules Credit Union, 3171 West 4700 South, Taylorsville, Utah on July, 6, 2009 at approximately 11:35 a.m.

While at the credit union, Hughes obtained a deposit slip and wrote a robbery demand note. The note indicated that Hughes had a firearm and demanded money. Hughes handed the robbery note written on the deposit slip to one of the credit union tellers. The teller then opened the cash drawer and provided United States currency to Hughes. Hughes then exited the credit union and was last seen by witnesses running south on 3200 West.

On July 8, 2009, the Taylorsville Police Department received a telephone call from a tipster that Hughes resembled the Hercules Credit Union robber and that he resided at 5199 South Huntington Road, Kearns, Utah, and drove a Dodge Neon bearing Utah license plate 318MLA.

On July 9, 2009, Taylorsville Police Department officers and detectives observed the Dodge Neon at 5199 South Huntington Road, Kearns, Utah. Hughes exited the residence and was approached by officers.  Hughes was interviewed and admitted his involvement in the Hercules Credit Union robbery. The confession included details of how the proceeds from the credit union robbery were spent and his activities prior to, and following, the robbery. Hughes also provided details about the Hercules Credit Union robbery that only an individual with intimate knowledge of the robbery would know. Hughes' statement was corroborated facts during the post-robbery investigation.

The FBI is grateful to all of the local and federal law enforcement agencies who continue to actively work this investigation as it continues to develop.

Hughes, like all individuals who have been arrested is considered innocent until convicted in a court of law.
